What Is Upcycling?
First of all what is upcycling? Upcycling is basically the trendy new way of saying reusing your waste. We create on average about 4.5 pounds of waste every single day. Most of that waste sits in a landfill to rot. It is not good for our planet or us to be constantly throwing away garbage. Upcycling has become trendy in the past few years due to the green movement. It is a great way to encourage people to reuse and recycle instead of throwing away.
People upcycling all sorts of junk items. You can recycle clothing into pillows, recycle bowls into lampshades, make a bed out of books. There are so many creative ideas out there of what to do with your junk. These are 5 of our favorite ideas we have come across.
Here are 5 ideas to inspire you to not throw out that old junk but to reuse it for something new!
Upcycling Candle Jars
If you are a candle lover, you probably have tons of half used or almost burnt out candles lying around. You can put those beautiful jars to good use by cleaning them out and then reusing them. There are so many things you can do with an empty candle jar, some ideas are:
- Q-Tip Holders
- Make-up Brush Holders
- Change Jar
- Cotton Ball Holder
- Pen Holder
In addition to making great little holders for things they can also be used for your pets! Use them to hold treats. It is also a great place to store pet collars or tags.
Old Chests Make Wonderful Coffee Tables
If you find an old chest laying around in storage or in someone’s garbage don’t let it go to waste! Paint it, decorate and make it yours. Then place it in your living room for a beautiful new coffee table (BONUS: It has storage!) You can add stuffing and material on the top to make it an ottoman if you prefer that instead! If you like the rustic look you might just want to clean the chest up and see if that works for you. Low effort and a big payoff is always a win-win!
Garbage makes GREAT kids crafts!
Do you have kids to keep busy? Then keep your old cans, milk jugs and egg cartons! Old milk jugs make awesome little doll houses when you cut out the middle and decorate them. Egg Cartons can be cut into pieces that make great turtle shells or a base to make a bug. Cans can be used to make walkie talkies or cut holes into them and put a child safe light inside to make a lantern. There is so much you can do!
Old Books Are Great For Upcycling.
Old books can come in handy for many things! You can tie a few books together with a rubber band and stick your knives between the pages as a knife block. When gutted books make excellent hidden storage. You can also make your own tablet holder with an old book. You can take the pages out of an old book and make a super cute wreath or use it for some other sort of DIY project.
There are people who have made actual furniture from stacks of books like chair arms and beds. If you are really into books or have a library or office in your home you can tear out pages, stain them or distress them and put them in a frame. This will give you some unique art work for your walls.
Old Ladders Come In Handy!
Old ladders can make quite a chic bookcase. Paint it, add some fairy lights, fake ivy and you will have a beautiful piece of furniture you will be proud to show off. You can turn into a shelf by hanging it on your wall. Get creative with your upcycling! This is your chance to make something you absolutely love custom-made just how you want it! Add ladders to the sides of your tv to hold movies, CDS or video games.
What ever you choose to upcycle, make it fun and make it yours! Upcycling is rewarding in so many ways. You get the satisfaction of creating something yourself, you get to save money and you put in your part in saving our planet!
