Destination weddings are on the rise, which leads to more and more people enquiring, “what should I wear?”

I guess most of us remember the looks of Naina (Deepika Padukone) at her best friend Aditi’s (Kalki Koechlin) destination wedding ceremony in the Bollywood movie Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.

The outfits were a mix of traditional with modernity, and a lot of vibrant colours. Remember that lehenga-choli that Naina wore for the Mehendi ceremony? A canary-yellow lehenga with heavy latkans and teeny-weeny hot pink, barely-there choli and a net dupatta. All of them openly or secretly loved the look. In fact, there wasn’t one look, that we did not feel like flaunting. It raised our expectations a few notches high and we keep on hunting for those perfect outfits for that dreamy destination wedding.

Dress Up For A Destination Wedding

Outfits for a destination wedding need to be chosen more carefully than usual. If you face a faux pas in a regular wedding, you have the option to change into something else, but in a destination wedding, your options are very, very limited, and in no case can your look go wrong.

Creating a statement at a destination wedding

A destination wedding is a unique experience both for the bride and groom, and the guests. A unique experience obviously calls for a unique dressing, that will create a statement and make the photos memorable and insta-worthy. And before you buy or design the outfits for that destination wedding, you need to keep in mind a few tips and tricks that will help you stand out and are at par with the occasion.

How to plan and pack for the destination wedding

Colour and shades: This is your chance to go basic on makeup and all colourful on outfit. If you have ever wondered where to wear that orange salwar kameez, blue shoes or yellow lehenga, utilise this the most. May you look stunning and bright and look all vibrant matching the natural beauty of the beaches or the grandeur of forts and palaces.

The work on outfits:

Considering the location, you can choose to go light on the designs and handiwork. A lighter embroidery or embellishment on your salwar kameez, saree or lehenga, will highlight your dress more against the background of the palaces or beaches. If the destination is tropical, go for a peachy pastel shade, and breezy outfits for that beach.

Definitely keep in mind the weather and location:

For a tropical location or a location with higher moisture content in the air, choose outfits accordingly. It not only means that you need to be choosy about outfits, but you will also need to pack more waterproof makeup, matte powder, sweat pads, setting spray, etc.

Keep it casual:

Have you ever been jealous of those who wear sneakers with a lehenga? Then this is the chance for you to try it out. You can always ditch your high- heels and stilettos for a destination wedding and go for comfortable strappy flats, and our all-time favourite juttis.

Go all fancy with quirky prints:

Since you are actually trying to avoid heavy handiwork and embellishments, you can stock with quirky-printed outfits for the destination wedding. Play up with the colors and prints and create a statement of your own.

Opt for less layering:

There are high chances that for a destination wedding you will be staying out for most of the time, which also hints that you are going to sweat a lot. Thus, choose an outfit that requires less layers, easy to wear and which you can change super-quick.

Consider the weightage of our suitcase:

Indian dresses are is known to be heavy and take up a lot of space. So be sure the number of outfits you need to carry. Too many of them will lessen the space for other things and you might end up paying some fee at the airport. Do chalk out very carefully as to what all clothes you can fit in and absolutely require to wear at the wedding.

Accessorise minimally but smartly:

Plan and pair with your outfits the minimal bling possible. Let you and your dresses shine the brightest. And of course, cases of theft are often registered. So, it’s better to be safe than sorry. Go less on the jewels, and more on matching embroidered clutch bag, which would accessorize your outfit.

While we have shared with you the list as to what all things to be kept in mind, all you need to do is follow the checklist, glam up in your finest attire and have fun.
