Rooting For The Home Team

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about Sudbury, it’s that the city is bursting at the seams with passionate sports fans, incredible athletes, and dedicated coaches and administrators.

In the past five years, I’ve spent interacting with that group as a sports journalist, I’ve been inspired, amazed, and honored to play a role in sharing their stories with the rest of the city.

Over the past couple of months, as I’ve been chatting with people about Sports Life, there has been an absolutely infectious level of excitement surrounding each and every conversation. A publication dedicated entirely to celebrating everything about Sudbury sports? Well, it’s long overdue!

Sports Life will bring together the accomplishments of athletes from young to old, from the house leagues right up to the international and professional ranks. It will embrace the city’s proudest moments on every playing field imaginable no matter the season, no matter the sport.

And the beauty of sports in Sudbury is that there’s so much to choose from. Did you know there are roughly 57 different sports that take place at some point in the year in some area of this city?

They’re as much a part of the city and its history as nickel and mining. I hope to be able to reach out to each and every one of those sports in one of the six issues that will come out each year.

Sports play an integral role in any community. Not only do they bring people together, both on the field of play and in the stands, but they also encourage healthy lifestyles, positive attitudes, and personal growth. Those are three concepts I fully support and the approach by which I live my own life.

I’m a bit of a sports junky myself. I’m a regular on the local volleyball courts through the winter and the ball diamonds in the summer. In fact, it was a fastball that originally brought me to this city.

In 2001, I enrolled at Cambrian College, partly because of the availability of my program of choice, and partly because, as a southern Ontario gal, I was eager to venture away from home and explore the rest of the province. But more persuasively, I admit, I chose Cambrian because the college had a varsity fastball team.

I wore the Golden Shields colors proudly for four years (through two different programs), and was honored to captain the team in my final year. I still reflect fondly on the memories created and the lifetime friendships forged with teammates and coaches on ball diamonds across the province.

And really, that’s only a small part of what sports have done for me.

A much bigger part is the door that sports have opened to you, the sports junkies of Sudbury. This magazine has been created in your honor. It has been inspired by you, brought to fruition by you, and filled, cover to cover, by you. This is your passion for sports on paper and was sharing it with the entire community.
